Christmas Carols have been with us as long as Christmas but as movies and other outlets began to emerge carols moved from the more traditional songs to somewhat generic carols.

We Three Kings gave way to Jingle Bell Rock. Oh Holy Night and Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.

Over time Christmas music became less spiritual and more commercial.

In commercial businesses traditional Christmas religious music might be objectionable to some customers so there was a need for non-secular music.

Commercial Music

By the mid 20th century there was a flood of more commercial Christmas songs. White Christmas is still the largest selling song in history. Sleigh Bells, Winter Wonderland, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, became additional best sellers.

Some Final Thoughts

Christmas has always been a somewhat confusing but inclusive holiday. While being a very spiritual holiday to Christians around the world it’s still a holiday that all can enjoy without being Christian.

Which is why there’s Santa Claus and Rudolph. What’s your favorite Christmas Carol? Comments below
