For some it's as simple as flying the flag. For others, the greatest act of patriotism is burning the flag. What is patriotism and how do we define it?

For me, it is placing the service above self and a willingness to serve others or assist in their time of need. My understanding of patriotism is tied to service, selflessness and every once and a while protest the injustices that encroach into our lives and communities.

WalletHub today released its list of 2016's Most Patriotic States. Montana as the 7th Most Patriotic State in the union.

To identify the country’s patriotic hotspots, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 12 key metrics such as military engagement, voting habits and civic education.

24th – Percent of Residents Who Enlisted in the Military
23rd – Number of Active-Duty Military Personnel per Capita
3rd – Number of Peace Corps Volunteers per Capita
16th – % of Residents Who Voted in the Most Recent Presidential Election
18th – Volunteer Rate
2nd – Number of Veterans per Capita
22nd – Civics Education Requirement
20th – Volunteer Hours per Resident
5th – Number of Americorps Volunteers per Capita
