Freedom of speech seems to be the hot topic of the day. And a lot of people are finding themselves in hot water for simply speaking their minds.

Trump Trumped?

Presidential candidate Donald Trump shared some thoughts about Mexican immigrants and the media floodgates opened wide to chastise his remarks.

The list of companies and events that are shedding any contact with Trump are growing by the day.

He will be suing Univision for dumping the Spanish language channel televising the Miss America Pageant.

NBC will not be carrying “Apprentice” next season nor will they air the Miss America and Miss Universe Pageants.

Macy’s delivered a statement saying,

"We are disappointed and distressed by recent remarks about immigrants from Mexico. We do not believe the disparaging characterizations portray an accurate picture of the many Mexicans, Mexican Americans and Latinos who have made so many valuable contributions to the success of our nation."

And who of course are our customers.

Serta bedding has joined the Trump boycott as well as the list expands.

Is Bernie Sanders A Gun Nut?

Vermont Senator and Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders also got notice from anti-gun groups for his remarks during a CNN interview on last Sunday’s "State of the Union" TV show.

"If somebody has a gun and it falls into the hands of a murderer and the murderer kills somebody with a gun, do you hold the gun manufacturer responsible? Not any more than you would hold a hammer company responsible if somebody beats somebody over the head with a hammer. That is not what a lawsuit should be about," Sanders said Sunday.

What did the anti-gun groups do when they heard that? As you might guess they went ballistic. Bernie is sounding like the other party. Our hero has feet of clay. Oh My God, Boycott Bernie.

Some Final Thoughts

Politicians are going to say all kinds of things between now and November 2016 to try to get elected. But the problem I have is the backlash from various special interest groups.

How can any politician say what he or she truly means if every fringe element is going to come out of the woodwork and bash them into submission.

Destroy their reputation, harass their family, cost them their jobs, and livelihood. No wonder no real candidates for either party can be found. No one wants the senseless aggravation.

If you can’t be absolutely honest about your thoughts before the election how can any candidate be trusted after the election? We have no idea whatsoever of your true positions.

But if they level with us about how they really feel about the issues we’re all facing they’ll never make it out of the primaries. We don’t want to hear that.

“Mr. or Ms. Candidate do you like ice cream?” “Hummm, perhaps, maybe, can I get back to you on that.”

Yes, please get back to me. In the mean time I will wonder where our First Amendment free speech rights went.

And try to think of what’s safe to say next.
