North Dakota River to Pass Record Levels [PHOTOS]
Flooding in North Dakota was expected to enter record territory on Friday, with the Souris River expected to peak over the weekend, breaking a record set in 1881.
About 15 to 20 percent of Minot, North Dakota was inundated with flood water, which was expected to increase as the river continued to swell over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
About 12,000 residents were evacuated from the flood zone and officials were considering additional evacuations on Friday. The river was expected to reach between 1,564 to 1,565 feet during the overnight hours on Saturday, which would be about 6 feet above flood stage and 9 feet above major flood stage.
Water has been overflowing the city’s dikes, some of which are leaking, since Wednesday, CNN reported. There are concerns that the main levees won’t hold back water as the river peaks.
