I  was in Boise, Idaho last week taking care of my mother who had been diagnosed with COVID-19. She tested positive at the end of January, but that is just the beginning of the story.

My mom is a nurse and has taken every precaution to protect herself from COVID, but that didn't prevent her from ending up in the hospital. On top of everything she was already dealing with, she was diagnosed with COVID pneumonia. Her oxygen levels became dangerously low, and my dad had to take her to the emergency room as a result.

She was unable to hold food down, and couldn't eat much for nearly a week. She was weak, exhausted, and her immune system was depleted.

Fortunately, she was only in the hospital for a short time. She was sent home with an oxygen machine to help with her breathing. A machine that she's still using as I write this.

My mom is a healthy person. She eats well, gets regular exercise, and is one of the hardest working people I know. It was very hard to see her so sick when I first arrived in Boise. She told me that she had never been as sick in her life.

It has been over a month since my mom got diagnosed with COVID, and I'm incredibly thankful to say that she is slowly recovering, but she still has a long way to go.

Taking care of my mom was truly inspiring. Not only did I get to witness her getting a little better every day, but I was also completely blown away by the love and support of her friends that were constantly reaching out to check on her. Her friends dropped off flowers, food, get well cards, gift cards. Both of my brothers flew in from out of state to help her out as well. That love and generosity helped boost my mom's spirits and it helped her stay positive.

There is a lot of darkness and negativity in the world, but it showed me that there's also a lot of love and light.
