A rancher in eastern Montana who admitted to killing a bald eagle was sentenced to one-year probation.

According to The Billings Gazette a federal judge issued the ruling and ordered 66-year-old Dale Duwayne Buerkle to pay a $1,000 fine and $1,000 in restitution.

He didn't shoot or trap the bald eagle instead a dead calf carcass was poisoned when the bird ate some of the calf died.

Buerkle's attorney says his client made a mistake and "wants to put this behind him."
