Man Accused of Fatally Shooting Friend While on Mushrooms
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Montana authorities say a Billings man shot and killed a friend and wounded himself with a military-style AR-15 carbine while they were tripping on mushrooms last fall.
The Billings Gazette reports that 30-year-old William Eugene Kenney pleaded not guilty on Friday to negligent homicide with a weapons enhancement. He's accused of killing 25-year-old John Smathers.
The charging documents say Kenney told a detective that he and his friend "got kinda crazy" and thought they were dying after getting high on psilocybin (sil-oh-SY'-bin) mushrooms on Nov. 21.
The documents say Kenney shot Smathers with an AR-15, then shot himself and passed out.
An autopsy showed Smathers died of a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Kenney had a gunshot wound to his chin.
He is in jail on a $50,000 bond.
