ALERT: Whiteout Conditions Possible, Snow and 60+ MPH Winds
Southwest Montana is under a High Wind warning until Tuesday afternoon with winds of 60 to 70 mph possible at times, accompanied by snow. Dangerous driving conditions will occur.
You can check the real time Montana winds speeds here.
Howling wind and heavy snow at times will make traveling a bear, on and off during this period. Whiteout conditions are possible. Drifting snow might be another factor, especially on wide open roads.
Downed tree branches and power lines are possible, too. These could be serious issues as blowing snow may cover them up before they can be addressed. In other words, if you see the weather go downhill...stay home and off the roads.
According to the National Weather Service:
- HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON MONDAY TO 3 PM TUESDAY.
- WHAT...West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph expected. *
- WHERE...Beaverhead, Gallatin and Madison Counties.
- WHEN...From Noon today to 3 PM Tuesday.
- IMPACTS...High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
- A cold front is expected to pass the area late Monday afternoon and evening.
- Moderate to heavy snow showers may accompany the front at all elevations and may briefly restrict visibility down to a quarter mile or less and cause roads to become slippery.
- Additionally, blowing snow may cause periods of near whiteout conditions at and above mountain pass level Monday evening through Tuesday morning.
- People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown around or damaged by the wind.
If you must travel during this time period, use your headlights at all times. Check your wipers and wiper fluids. Make sure your emergency kit is fully stocked and that you have extra gloves, hats, etc.
Make sure your cell phone is fully charged. Should your car become disabled, wait times for assistance might be longer with bad weather.
