5 Million Pounds of Beef Added to Massive Recall
A company in Arizona is expanding the scope of its beef recall over fears that it could contain salmonella.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that a unit of Brazil-based meat-packing giant JBS is now recalling more than 12 million pounds of beef that was shipped thoughout the U.S.
JBS Tolleson in Arizona already recalled about 7 million pounds of beef in October.
All products involved in the recall have the USDA inspection number "EST. 267." on the packaging.
According to a CDC map, at least 8 people in Montana have been affected by the meat.
The recalled beef has been distributed nationwide and includes brands such as Kroger, Cedar River Farms, Grass Run Farms and JBS generic.
The meat in question was packaged between July and September. Health officials say all the potentially tainted products have been removed from retail outlets. However, they warn that people may still have recalled meat stored in freezers at home.
56 people have been hospitalized due to tainted meat, no deaths have been reported.
Symptoms of the bacteria include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever in the first 3 days after exposure.
