Tester Supports Legislation to Help Veterans’ Families

Senator Jon Tester is introducing legislation to provide support for those who care for wounded, ill or injured veterans.

Tester’s Military and Veteran Caregiver Services Improvement Act would expand upon the Department of Veterans Affairs’ current caregiver services program by increasing the types of resources available to family members who have taken on a caregiver role.  Among other provisions, this legislation would extend caregiver support services and assistance to veterans of all eras.

“Those who commit their lives to helping veterans should be honored and supported for their selfless service," Tester said. “This bill will expand the training and assistance available to the family members and caregivers who often have put their careers on hold to care for our veterans.”

The Military and Veteran Caregiver Services Improvement Act would:
o    Make veterans of all eras eligible for caregiver support services
o    Place more emphasis on mental health injuries
o    Allow veterans to transfer GI Bill benefits to a dependent in order to help spouses of injured veterans get an education and prepare to provide the primary income for the family
o    Make caregivers who work in the federal government eligible for flexible work schedules
o    Provide caregivers assistance with childcare, financial advice and legal counseling

Tester recently wrapped up a tour of Montana with VA Secretary Bob McDonald, during which the topic of additional support for caregivers was raised.
