Would The Founding Fathers Be Proud Today?
Two hundred and forty-one years ago a group of men decided on the course of a new nation.
They had lived under British rule and felt the time had come to make some corrections that would afford the citizens of the newly formed United States of America freedoms they had not experienced previously.
The result was a nation that in spite of its many faults is truly the shinning city on a hill.
The Founders Saw The Future
Freedoms never go out of style or become outdated. But sometimes their interpretations get a little murky.
The First Ten Amendments to the US Constitution are the basis of our ability to exercise the rights desired in the Declaration of Independence — Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness.
What The Founders Missed
We seem to have strayed from the path the founders laid out for us in some areas. I’m not sure the founders would be completely proud of what their vision has become in 2017.
I doubt they spent much time addressing bathroom gender preferences, or gun registration, or hate speech.
I wonder how they would have felt about some speakers not being able to express themselves on college campuses.
The same speech restrictions they had experienced in England.
I wonder how they would feel about masked groups shutting down highways, closing shopping malls, and destroying property all under the guise of peaceful protest and redress of grievances?
I wonder how they would feel today watching people wipe their feet on the American flag that they and their countrymen were fighting so hard to defend at the time of the declaration.
Some Final Thoughts
Is spite of the “silliness” coming out of Washington D.C. I feel the founders would appreciate the big picture of what they foresaw those two hundred plus years ago.
Compared to other countries, the US, and its direction, holds up pretty well on a host of issues against the competition.
We’re not perfect by any means and we still have a lot of work to do to make the US all it could be.
But the work of the founders does make that which we must do much easier with the Constitution than it would be without it.
While the founders might have concerns about some of our current issues I think on the whole they would be proud.
