When you see the Medal of Honor worn by an American hero in person for the first time, it will stop you in your tracks. Medal of Honor recipient Leroy Petry was in Billings, Montana Thursday night speaking at a fundraiser for an organization called "Veteran Air Warriors."
Staff Sergeant David Bellavia is the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the medal of honor. Last week, he was inducted into the Pentagon’s Hall of Heroes. If you missed his incredible speech, you can watch it below.
Why not name the school mascot in honor of Staff Sgt Travis Atkins, a Medal of Honor recipient, by honoring him and all of his fellow 10th Mountain Division mountaineer soldiers that he gave his life for?
Jeff Krogstad grew up with Travis Atkins, and attended the White House ceremony with the Atkins family. He's encouraging the community to name the mascot for the new high school as the "Mountaineers." He joined us on our statewide radio show Montana Talks to discuss the idea. Click below for the audio:
The family of Staff Sergeant Travis Atkins will be back home in Bozeman Friday afternoon. On Friday morning they joined Fox and Friends to remember their son, and his heroic sacrifice that led to his awarding of the Medal of Honor at the White House earlier this week.
Wednesday at the White House, President Donald Trump awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor to Staff Sergeant Travis Atkins, who heroically gave his life in 2007 by tackling a man with a suicide vest, saving three fellow soldiers.
"Travis Atkins is an American hero. He embodies what it means to selflessly serve. As someone raised in Bozeman public schools, I can’t think of someone better to name our new high school after, as well as the VA clinic in Bozeman." – Senator Steve Daines
On March 27th, Staff Sgt. Travis Atkins will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Trump at the White House. I've heard this idea from fellow veteran friends on both the Left and the Right: Hey, if Bozeman is looking for the name of their new high school, why not name it after a great war hero who gave his life for this country- and hails from Bozeman, Montana? I concur- what a great idea.
