Former Libyan dictator Muammar Gadhafi, who’s been in hiding since August when a NATO-backed rebel force seized his headquarters in Tripoli, was killed on Thursday after rebels stormed his hometown of Sirte, where the last remnants of troops loyal to him were hiding. He was 69 years old.
US officials said Friday that Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical cleric linked to al-Qaida, has been killed by an airstrike in Yemen.
Al-Awlaki, 40, was seen as especially dangerous because his internet savvy and English-fluency made it easier for him to draw recruits to attack the United States. His sermons urging such attacks were widely circulated among militants in the West.
A wave of deadly attacks swept across Iraq Monday, killing dozens of people. The violence was so severe that the interior minister ordered the country’s security forces to clear the streets of all parked cars.
