Pack of wolves kill 8 llamas near Butte

BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — Federal wildlife managers plan to kill a pack of wolves that killed eight llamas last month in the Highlands Mountains southeast of Butte.

John Steuber, state director of the USDA Wildlife Services, says an Oct. 11 investigation confirmed that three llamas were killed by wolves and five others probably were.

He says the next step is to get a radio collar on one of the wolves to better track them.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist Nathan Lance says there are eight wolves in the Spire Pack.

Owners who lose livestock to wolf, grizzly bear or mountain lion depredation can receive some compensation for their loss.

George Edwards, executive director of the Montana Livestock Loss Board, tells The Montana Standard the compensation can be $600 per animal or more if the owner has a purchase receipt.
