Montana Rivers Already Seeing Spring Flood Warnings Due To Ice Jams
The Powder River in eastern Montana happens to be the first dealing with flooding issues. Specifically, and ice jam seven miles south of Broadus is their culprit and causing concern.
- According to the National Weather Service on Monday, March 27th, 2023
- A FLOOD WARNING FOR AN ICE JAM NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM WEDNESDAY.
- WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam continues.
- WHERE...Powder River County along the Powder River at and south of Broadus.
- WHEN...Until 600 PM Wednesday.
- IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.
- Depending on ice behavior, any release of the ice jam could result in sudden rises of water, leading to a rapid flooding situation. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 118 PM on Monday, Powder River County officials report flooding continues in the warned area.
- Only the ice jam 7 miles south of Broadus persists. All others have dispersed.
- People downstream from the warned area along the Powder River in northeast Powder River County should also remain alert and be prepared for ice jamming and possible flooding.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include... The Broadus vicinity, and areas up to 10 miles south of Broadus along the Powder River.
- PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Do not drive on or attempt to cross flooded roads, find an alternate route.
- Roads and driveways may be damaged or washed out in places. Stay away or be swept away. River banks can become unstable and unsafe.
- Move livestock and farm equipment to safe locations.
