Montana’s Surprising Rank In A National Homelessness Study

Homelessness is definitely a problem the entire country has been grappling with in a big way over the past several years. It can sometimes feel like the issue is isolated to places we see most often in the headlines, like parts of California or cities such as Seattle. Media coverage tends to focus there, which makes it easy to forget that nearly every state is facing its own version of this challenge and trying to find solutions that actually work.

I recently came across a study from SmileHub titled “Best States for Homeless People,” and I will admit my initial assumptions were way off. I would have guessed states like California would be ranked very high. They came in 22nd in the country. Surprisingly, Montana ranked among the top states overall.

According to the study, there are more than 770,000 people experiencing homelessness nationwide. Many struggle to access basic needs like medical care and reliable meals, while others face long term homelessness tied to mental health challenges and the rising cost of housing.

The top five states in the rankings were Connecticut, North Dakota, Maryland, Montana, and Indiana. Montana’s placement suggests that despite harsh weather and rural challenges, support systems here are doing a lot right. It does not mean the problem is solved, but it does highlight that Montana is quietly doing something that is working, even when conditions are far from ideal.
