Bighorn sheep reintroduced near Cameron
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — State wildlife officials say they have reintroduced 52 bighorn sheep to an area south of Cameron.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said the animals were released on Tuesday in the Wolf Creek drainage in southwest Montana.
They had been captured from the Quake Lake area in the Madison Range. Ten of the animals were fitted with radio collars to enable biologists to monitor the herd's movements.
Officials said future transplants may be necessary to augment the population.
A recent proposal to relocate some bighorn sheep out of state because of a lack of suitable habitat in Montana was rejected by state wildlife commissioners.
