It was just 66 years ago yesterday that “something” crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. The US Air Force claimed it was a weather balloon but eyewitness accounts have fueled speculation for years that is was a visit by extraterrestrial life. UFO fanatics and conspiracy theorists are convinced beyond any doubt that the US Government is part of the biggest cover up of all time.

Everyone, at one time or another has wondered if we are alone in the universe. As we learn more and more about the universe it seems highly unlikely that life in some form does not exist on other planets and solar systems.

“The Roswell Incident”

Some things never change. When news is made there are always one or two spokespeople who take to the podium to give us the “full story.” In the case of the Roswell Incident that duty fell to Walter Haut, the Roswell Army Air Field public information officer. In his July 8, 1947 report, Haut told reporters that the 509th Operations Group had recovered the remains of a “flying disc” for a crash site on a ranch near Roswell.
However, later on in the day another spokesperson stepped up to “adjust” the facts. Roger Ramey, Commanding General of the 8th Air Force claimed that it was not a flying disc at all but a good old-fashioned weather balloon. They even went so far as to trot out some foil, rubber and wood debris for some photo ops.

What Really Landed In Roswell?

I guess we’ll never know for sure. But after 66 years there are still many unanswered questions. Countless books, magazine articles, interviews, eyewitness accounts just added to the confusion and bank accounts on both sides of the issue.

There are many who believe that the advances in computers and other electronics didn’t come from the moon landing but from Roswell. Superior technologies from outer space lead to smart bombs in Iraq, thermo imaging, stealth aircraft and many other advances.

True or False?

Does it really matter? If advances came from the mind of man or the mind of an extraterrestrial we are still reaping those rewards today. One speculation is that the UFO’s we see today are actually visits from us in the future. That we’ve come back to get a more accurate picture of history or to perhaps to make sure that certain events do or do not take place. And the beat goes on.

Some Final Thoughts

Put me solidly in the camp that believes that we are not alone in the vast reaches of space. Will anyone show up to phone home during my lifetime? That’s impossible to say. But, it sure would be cool if it did happen — or would it.

Half the planet would be on their knees believing it’s the second coming, and the other half would be blasting away with every available weapon. If extraterrestrials actually have the technology to monitor and interpret our television broadcasts; that alone would probably be enough knowledge to just fly right by us and look for intelligent life elsewhere.
