Wastewater Pond Stops Spilling Into Gallatin River
The pond that caused wastewater to spill into Montana's Gallatin River has emptied and is no longer leaking.
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Yellowstone Club say the pond in Big Sky emptied early Monday morning after leaking for four days.
DEQ public policy director Kristi Ponozzo says the experts can now discuss how to repair and clean up the spill. She says the agency will penalize the Yellowstone Club for the spill, but focused on testing water quality for now.
Yellowstone Club spokesman Matthew Kidd says the work might not be able to begin immediately because it will need to wait until the area is dry.
The pond held about 35 million gallons of treated sewage water. DEQ says it shouldn't pose a threat to human health.
