How many films set or filmed in Montana have been up for Best Picture? The answer will surprise you.

The 94th Academy Awards is Sunday, March 27th at 6 PM on ABC and is essentially a wide-open race for many of the categories. One of the front runners for Best Picture is Netflix's The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch. This film is set in 1925 Montana and the favorite to take the big prize of Best Picture home.

So in honor of the Academy Awards coming up on Sunday, we did a deep dive of all the Best Picture winners and nominees in the past and wanted to see how many of the films were set or filmed in Montana. Oddly enough there were only four films that fit that category.

Some films were partially filmed, fully filmed, or set in Montana that wasn't nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards that should have been. Films such as Jurassic Park, A River Runs Through It, and Open Range should all have been in contention.

A River Runs Through It is one of the best films directed by Robert Redford, introduced fly fishing to the world, and filmed in its entirety in Montana. Jurassic Park was a massive blockbuster by the iconic Steven Speilberg and filmed scenes in eastern Montana. Open Range is directed and stars Kevin Costner and is one of the best Westerns of recent years.

We are just saying the Academy Awards needs to figure it out and films set or filmed in Montana deserve more recognition.

So let's celebrate the four films nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards set or filmed in Montana in the past.
