Purple Reign: Prince Dominates on Top of Billboard 200
The Purple One lives on through the music: As of this week, the legendary Prince, who sadly passed away last Thursday (April 21), posthumously reigns supreme on the charts in the wake of his death.
The prolific musician sits in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots of this week's Billboard 200 with The Very Best of Prince and the Purple Rain soundtrack, respectively. The Very Best of Prince, which sold an equivalent of 179,000 album units between sales and streaming, becomes Prince's fifth No. 1 on the albums chart, and his first No. 1 album in almost exactly a decade since 2006's 3121.
"His albums are selling incredibly well not just because of the artist’s extraordinary popularity, but also because his music has limited availability on streaming services and YouTube. The only streaming service with access to his songs is Tidal," Billboard reports.
Along with landing at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot, Prince appears eight times in total on the Billboard 200, including 1999 (No. 31), Sign 'O' the Times (No. 95) and HITnRn: Phase One (No. 147). Prince now has an incredible 18 top 10 albums in total.
