BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) — Montana State University crews began clearing space for a new $20 million building supporting Native American students.
The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports the university removed fewer than 10 trees on the east side of campus Wednesday to make room for the American Indian Hall.
School spokesman Mike Becker says the trees have been transported, recycled or saved for future campus projects.
University President Waded Cruzado says the money for the facility came from private donations.
The Bozeman university says American Indian student enrollment grew to more than 700 and is expected to reach 1,000 in coming years.
The university aims to open the building by August 2021.
Officials say construction has temporarily blocked parking spots and closed traffic routes in the area.
