Massive Wildfire Forces Closure of Popular Montana State Park

A fast-moving wildfire has forced the immediate closure of one of Montana’s most beloved state parks, sending campers and hikers scrambling and prompting a swift emergency response. What began as a small blaze quickly grew into a sprawling wildfire, fueled by high winds, dry conditions, and soaring summer temperatures.

The Dawson County Fire, which broke out in Makoshika State Park on Wednesday, forced state officials to close the park to visitors partially. All roads, trails, campgrounds, day use areas and all other facilities are currently closed. The cause and size of the fire are unknown. The incident is still under investigation.

Rain last night substantially reduced the wildfire that began burning Wednesday evening at Makoshika State Park. West Glendive Fire Department is Incident Command. Aerial fire suppression will be occurring today, and the vast majority of the park will remain closed. However, the visitors center, located near the park entrance, will remain open to the public. The yurt and at least one restroom was lost to the wind-driven fire. Some significant trail damage is anticipated, but the picnic shelters, amphitheater, and most campsites have not yet been impacted. Conditions will be updated when more information becomes available.
