There aren't hundreds of gates, terminals, or dozens of stores or restaurants. If you're lucky, Montana airports will maybe have two restaurants or shops.

The one issue Montana airports have to deal with more than others is the winter weather.

Snow, wind, and freezing temperatures can cause some issues for planes coming and going, but that's about it.

Or so you would think.

Which one? You won't believe it.

The Bert Mooney Airport in Butte was deemed one of the most challenging airspaces in America.

Why? It's due to the mountain terrain and lack of a control tower.

The lack of an airport tower can make landings extremely difficult for pilots.

The surrounding mountains can also make any pilot uneasy.

It's wild because the Butte Airport only has a handful of commercial flights.

We were surprised Great Falls International Airport didn't make this list.

The terrain might not be steep, but with an Air Force Base nearby, they would have to alter course so they don't come near it, which can be difficult with high winds in Northern Montana.
