Take a look at the details of this nationwide recall of a chicken fried rice product, as they could be in fridges or freezers right here in Montana. Possible Listeria contamination is the concern here and the reason for the recall.

The good news is that no reports of people getting sick have been posted, BUT the product did, in fact, test positive for Listeria - so at least some product could be quite dangerous to those at risk.

Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.

  • The USDA states that the product is made by Garland Ventures from Texas, and nearly 14,000 pounds of the chicken fried rice product is being recalled. These products were shipped nationwide and a full list of retailers was not yet available, making it difficult to limit down where exactly they ended up.
  • The RTE chicken fried rice product was produced on November 10, 2023. The following product is subject to recall:
  • 12-oz. trays containing Freshness Guaranteed brand “CHICKEN FRIED RICE DICED CHICKEN MEAT WITH VEGETABLES AND RICE IN A SAVORY SOY SAUCE” with lot code WK10CFR and a best if used by date of 11/10/2024 represented on the label.
  • The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. P-31993” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.
  • The problem was discovered by FSIS during review of testing results, which showed the product tested positive for L. monocytogenes.

Since the 'best if used by' date is not until 2024, the USDA urges people to check their freezers for this recalled product. If you know someone who enjoys these products, please let them know about this recall.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
