There's a bit of debate around Montana regarding which community is the oldest. However, according to the University of Montana, the oldest "incorporated" Montana town is Virginia City.

Virginia City is a popular summer destination for not only tourists but Montanans as well.  The little town comes alive between Memorial and Labor Day Weekends in the southwestern part of the state.

Downtown Virginia City

There are some wonderful options in the downtown area, including a couple of places for folks that have a sweet tooth. Virginia City Creamery serves up some of the best ice cream in the state and of course, you can't visit the town and not stop at Cousin's Candy Shop. There are souvenir shops and even an old-time photo store where you and your family or friends can have your picture taken.

The Pioneer Bar

For those that enjoy history AND a cold one, you will certainly want to check out the Pioneer Bar in Virginia City.  As one of the oldest bars in Montana, there is a ton of history not just in the stories that are told, but in the building itself. From the beautiful woodwork to the multiple mounted animal heads, this is what an old west saloon is all about.
