WARNING: Popular Candy Sold In Montana Linked To Cancer
If you're a Montanan with a sweet tooth, you might want to check this out.
For years, we've heard how candy might not be the best thing for us. Whether it's putting on additional pounds, "spoiling our dinner", or causing cavities, when it comes to candy, a little self-control and moderation might be best.
However, one seasonal candy which is extremely popular with both kids and adults has been potentially linked to cancer.
With Easter just around the corner, lots of Montanans will be hitting the stores to buy all kinds of sweet treats to fill those baskets. Chocolate Bunnies, jelly beans, M&M's, Reese's, and malted eggs are always popular, and when it comes to candy, Easter is just behind Halloween when it comes to sales.
However, according to Consumer Reports, one very popular Easter Candy could have potential health effects, including cancer.
Popular Easter Candy Could Be Linked To Cancer
Consumer Reports released information that states Red Dye 3 has been linked to cancer and the ingredient can be found in one of the biggest-selling Holiday candies out there. So which Easter candy uses Red Dye 3? That would be Peeps.
The marshmallow critters are beloved by some and cursed by others, but there is no denying their popularity. Over 700 million Peeps are sold around Easter each year, making them the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy. However, according to Consumer Reports, Red Dye 3 is used in the coloring of both purple and pink Peeps.
Red Dye 3 is used in other Peeps products as well and can be found in the following:
- Peeps Hot Tamales Marshmallow Chicks
- Party Cake Peeps
- Peeps Fruit Punch Marshmallow Chicks
- Peeps Wildberry Marshmallow Bunnies
It should be noted that Red Dye 3 has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is completely legal to use in products the additive is used in over 2900 different products that can be found on store shelves across Montana.
Just Born, the parent company of Peeps has announced that it will no longer use Red Dye 3 after Easter of 2024.
