Think You Know MSU? These Facts Might Surprise You
Voted one of the best colleges in Montana, Montana State University sits in the heart of Bozeman, rich in history and tradition. Founded in 1893, MSU has deep roots in agriculture and a legacy that spans generations. You may know about its academic excellence and school spirit, but do you know these fascinating facts about the university?
Montana State University was NOT always MSU
Montana State University has had quite the journey when it comes to its name. It all started as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana, which is quite a mouthful. Then, the school switched it up to the Montana College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts—another hefty title.

They still had not made up their mind because, in the 1920's, they went for something a bit simpler, and it became Montana State College. But wait, there's more! In 1965, they FINALLY settled on the name we know today: Montana State University.
Did you hear that? It's the MSU Steam Plant Whistle!
If you lived in Bozeman in the 40s and 50s, then Montana State College provided a bright and early 6:30 AM wake-up call from a train whistle on top of the campus heating plant. It was once again set off at 7:50 AM to mark the sound of class starting. The school stopped that tradition in 1978... I am going to guess it had something to do with the rest of the city not wanting to hear it.
BUT! In 1994, it was brought back and continues today ONLY for the first day of classes and for graduation.
"Bobcat" to "Champ"
We are all familiar with the famous Bobcat mascot here in Bozeman, but do you know much else about it? The Bobcat was chosen as the mascot in 1916, but MSU didn't have a costumed mascot until 1970. The mascot was named simply "Bobcat," and it wasn't until 1993 that the name you are familiar with today, "Champ," was solidified.
