Powerful Montana Windstorm Rips Roof Off Elementary School
I do not know if you noticed, but it was WINDY over the weekend here in Montana. All caps is not an exaggeration. Living in Livingston, wind is just part of life. Still, this weekend felt like a whole different level in some parts of the state. The worst of the storm appears to have hit Great Falls, where strong gusts caused major damage across the area.
According to the National Weather Service, winds reached speeds of around 70 miles per hour in parts of Cascade County on Sunday. Several other counties, including Carbon, Yellowstone, Stillwater, Park, Wheatland, and Sweet Grass also reported similar gusts. The highest on that report read “Carbon County: Quad Creek (RAWS), 91 MPH, 0925 AM, 03/08.” Wow...
Keep an eye out for this weeks weather... The National Weather Service did say that their is a possibility of another windstorm Thursday.
One of the most shocking moments from the storm happened at Lincoln Elementary School. Around midday Sunday, the winds tore the roof off the school building. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
City officials said the damage across Great Falls was significant. Downed power lines, broken tree limbs, and scattered debris were reported throughout the community. Emergency crews spent much of the day responding to calls related to fallen poles, trees, and structural damage.

Dispatchers also reported, in the Facebook post below, a small wildfire near Gibson Flats and dust storms north and south of town that reduced visibility to less than a mile in some areas. At one point, even a police patrol vehicle had its antenna ripped off by debris flying through the air.
