When people move to Montana, one of the requirements is, you absolutely have to have housing lined up. Now whether you are planning on buying a home or renting, knowing where you are going to rest your head literally has to be first on the list.

You could have your dream job lined up with great pay and benefits, but if you have yet to find housing, don't pack your house and think, "We will figure it out when we get there". In fact, don't even agree to move to Montana until you have secured housing.

Weekly, I see numerous posts on our local social pages saying, "my husband/wife took a job in Montana. We move in two weeks. We are looking for a 3 bedroom, 3 bath rental with a backyard". I just shake my head, and the comment section is always full of people saying, "don't do anything until you have housing".

Finding affordable housing is basically non-existent, but finding housing WITH a backyard is nearly impossible. Even a lot of the new townhomes/duplexes that are going up don't have a backyard. Why this is so hard to find, I don't know. Perhaps when they built the properties they thought people would rather have a garage then a fenced in area. I don't know.

Now I grew up in weather that was much colder and harsher than Montana winters and would give up a garage for a backyard any day. Yes it is nice not having to brush off your vehicle in the winter and not have to "let it run" before heading out. (Even though you still should let your vehicle warm up even if you have a garage). But I would take being able to let the dog out the patio door all year long over not having to brush snow off my vehicle.
