Honoring Former President Jimmy Carter: What to Know About January 9th Closures
If you haven't heard, former President Jimmy Carter passed away at his home in Georgia on December 29th. The renowned humanitarian and Nobel Prize winner was 100 years old.
In honor of the 39th President, Joe Biden declared January 9th a National Day of Mourning. This honorary day will also lead to the closure of various national organizations.
Here's what will be closed and other things to know about January 9th, 2025.
U.S Postal Service Will Be Closed
Most Federal offices, such as the USPS, will be closed on January 9th. Not all federal offices close; some remain open if they are considered essential.
The Supreme Court
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts declared that the Supreme Court building would also be taking this day off in remembrance of former President Jimmy Carter.
U.S. Stock Market
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed for this day of mourning. The Nasdaq has also stated that, while they are closing all U.S. equities and options, they will keep bond markets open but with reduced hours.
U.S. Flag Half Staff
In honor of President Carter's death, the U.S. Flag has been ordered to fly at half-staff for 30 days.
" ... in honor and tribute to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr., and as an expression of public sorrow, do hereby direct that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions for a period of 30 days from the day of his death. " - JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.
Funeral Schedule
The funeral for the former President is scheduled from January 4th to January 9th.

Jimmy Carter will officially be laid to rest next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, at their home in Georgia with a private interment.
