Montanans love their beer. That is no secret. A quick search shows there are well over 100 breweries scattered across Montana. From small town taprooms to well known craft breweries, beer culture runs pretty deep in Big Sky Country.

But believe it or not, there is one beer so strong it cannot legally be sold here. The beer is called Samuel Adams Utopias, and it is made by Samuel Adams. Calling it just a beer is almost misleading. The brewing process is closer to something you might expect from a high-end whiskey or wine.
Utopias is released every other year because it takes about 18 months to produce. The beer is aged in a variety of barrels including whiskey, cognac, and port casks. Some of those barrels are decades old and help give the beer its extremely complex flavor and EXTREME alcohol content.

Another reason the beer stands out is its alcohol content. Utopias clocks in at around 28% alcohol by volume, which is far stronger than a typical beer. Because of that strength, several states do not allow it to be sold. Montana happens to be one of them.

In total, the beer cannot legally be distributed in 15 states. Those states include Montana, Idaho, Utah, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Vermont, West Virginia, and Oregon. In places where it is allowed, bottles are rare and usually only available at specialty liquor stores.

And if you do manage to find one, it is not cheap. A single bottle typically sells for around $300. So while Montana has plenty of great breweries, this ultra-powerful beer is one you will not find on store shelves here.
