If you live in Montana or anywhere out west, you know fire season is always in the back of your mind. Other parts of the country deal with hurricanes. Out here, it is wildfire season that keeps people on edge.
It has already been a big topic this year. A lot of folks are talking about how little moisture we got this winter. On top of that, it has been recorded as one of the warmest winters Montana has seen. Sure, the mild days were nice at the time, but it could come at a cost once summer rolls around.

We are already starting to see signs of what could be ahead. Fires have been popping up across the western states, and some have been serious. Nebraska is currently dealing with multiple large wildfires that have burned more than 800,000 acres, making it the biggest fire event in that state’s history. Crews are still working to get them fully contained.

Closer to home, the Gallatin Valley saw a smaller but still concerning fire. Smoke could be seen rising south of Belgrade as crews responded to a fast moving, wind driven fire in the Axtell and High Flat area. Around 600 acres were impacted before firefighters were able to get it under control.
Dozens of personnel and multiple local departments jumped in quickly, knocking the fire down and keeping it from spreading further. Crews are still monitoring the area for any flare ups. It is a reminder that fire season can start earlier than expected, especially in a dry year.
