Dolly Parton’s Lasting Impact Reaches Thousands Of Montana Kids
If you could meet any living person, who would it be? I know my answer. Dolly Parton. She is someone I have admired for as long as I can remember, and I know I am far from alone in that. Her music has reached across generations, her generosity speaks louder than words, and her commitment to giving back sets a standard few can match. Today also happens to be her birthday. That makes it the perfect time to highlight the impact she has made right here in Montana.

Dolly Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, and turns 80 years old today. She has spent her whole life shaping music, and as she became more successful, she decided to give back. While her songs and legendary performances are widely known, her work off the stage may be even more meaningful. One of her most powerful contributions is the Imagination Library.
“Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland.” - Imagination Library

In Montana alone, the Imagination Library has reached nearly 27,500 children and delivered more than 590,000 books to homes across the state. That milestone places Montana as the 16th state in the nation to achieve full statewide participation.

The Montana Imagination Library was established in 2021 by First Lady Susan Gianforte. In 2023, First Lady Gianforte and Dolly Parton announced the statewide expansion of the program, ensuring that every child in Montana under the age of 5 could participate.
