Montana has a certain image to uphold.

Oh sure, there are a few towns that don't necessarily fit the whole rugged, outdoor, cowboy culture that Montana is known for. I mean, you have the hippies in Missoula and the hipsters in Bozeman, but the rest of Montana has a wildness to it. It's a place where you can go and get lost, a place to escape all of the pressures of society.

Now, I'm not saying Montanans are viewed as dumb, but I am saying that certain states are known more for their sophistication, garden parties, and finger sandwiches. For whatever reason, we have somehow tied "high society" to intelligence, and according to new data, that's not always the case.

What's the average IQ in Montana?

GeoPol decided to take a look at the 15 states with the highest IQs in America, and it just so happens that not only did Montana make the list, but we actually made the Top 10.

The data includes the average IQ for the state, and when it comes to Big Sky Country, the average IQ is 103.4, which is tied with Maine and good enough for 6th place. Of course, many of the Top IQ states are located in the northeast, where you will find the Ivy League schools. In fact, 3 of the Top 5 are Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

The shocker comes in 3rd place, which happens to be North Dakota.

Are you shocked that Montana is ranked so high? I mean, much of Montana is rural, so before all of the satellite this and that, wifi, and internet, folks could watch PBS and read books. I suppose that could have something to do with it. The other factor is all of the transplants. Have the people moving here from other states increased Montana's IQ?

I'm guessing several locals will say no to that one.
