Check your fridge. Several cottage cheese products sold under Walmart’s Great Value label are being recalled, and yes, Big Sky Country made the list.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, certain containers may include liquid dairy ingredients that didn’t meet state pasteurization standards. In other words, it might not have been fully pasteurized. For those on a raw milk kick, you probably don't care, but... the rest of us probably do.

The company says no reports of illness.

The recall was issued by Saputo Cheese USA Inc., which says there have been "no reported illnesses or hospitalizations" connected to the products. That’s the good news.

The issue was reportedly discovered during routine pasteurizer troubleshooting alongside the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The equipment has since been corrected, and no other products were affected.

Consuming dairy that isn’t properly pasteurized can pose health risks, especially for young kids, older adults, pregnant women, and folks with compromised immune systems. In other words, if your household includes grandma, toddlers, or someone going through medical treatment, this isn’t something to shrug off.

The affected cottage cheese was distributed to Walmart stores in 24 states between February 17 and February 20, including right here in Montana.

So what should you do?

If you recently picked up Great Value cottage cheese at your local Walmart in Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, or anywhere else in the state, double-check the packaging against the recall notice. If it matches, don’t eat it. Return it to the store for a refund or toss it. Better safe than sorry.
