Actress Daryl Hannah Arrested at White House Demonstration [VIDEO]
Daryl Hannah, who has acted in such films as ‘Splash,’ ‘Wall Street’ and the ‘Kill Bill’ series, was arrested on Tuesday for refusing to abandon a sit-in in front of the White House. Hannah was among more than 100 people detained by US Park Police while protesting the Keystone pipeline project.
“We stand here today to just say no to slavery, to just say no to tar, sands, oil, and no to the Keystone pipeline,” Hannah said.
If the project is approved by the State Department, an existing pipeline that now ends in Oklahoma will be expanded from central Alberta in Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. The move would significantly increase the amount of oil the US imports from Canada’s oil sands. Once completed, the 1,600-mile pipeline would be the largest in the U.S.
Proponents say the expansion would create thousands of jobs in both countries and reduce the US reliance on Middle Eastern oil. Environmentalists are against the project because they believe the process of extracting oil from the sands would create an unsafe amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
Although the State Department recently released a report that said the proposed pipeline would pose no major risks to the environment, the 50-year-old actress and activist disagreed.
“The Keystone I, which was put in only last year, has already had 12 different spills. And obviously the tar sands has already had a significant impact on the environment,” Hannah said. “As far as I know, the State Department impact report has been basically dismissed by anyone who has a brain.”
