Illinois’ Elmhurst College Questions Potential Students About Their Sexuality
“Would you consider yourself a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community?”
That’s what Elmhurst College recently asked prospective students on its application form. The private liberal arts school in suburban Chicago, which is affiliated with the United Church of Christ, is believed to be the first college in the US to ask the question.

South Dakota School District Is the Latest to Adopt a Four-Day Week
More than 120 school districts in 20 states, mostly in the western region of the US, now have three-day weekends because of state budget cuts to education.
Now the Irene-Wakonda School District in southeastern South Dakota is the latest to eliminate Friday classes, adding to the 25 percent of South Dakota schools that have already adopted a four-day week.

Teenagers Learn Science By Playing Baseball
Summer school has met the national pastime in Boston.
The tuition-free summer MIT Science of Baseball program teaches 30 inner-city teenage boys “baseball-related math and physics” during morning classes and then show the players how to translate those lessons to the diamond during afternoon games, reports The Boston Globe.
New High School Allows Students to Earn College Degree and Land Job with IBM
The IBM International Foundation and the New York City Public Schools have collaborated to create the new Pathways in Technology Early College High School, which will open in September.
Dubbed “P-Tech,” students can earn a standard four-year diploma, or opt to stay for two extra years — after which they’ll graduate with an associate’s degree in computer science from CUNY’s College of Technology (City Tech) for free. They can then continue their studies at City Tech, attend other colleges and apply the credits they’ve already earned, or be considered for employment by IBM’s IT department and at other companies.
