CHOTEAU, Mont. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Daines held a listening session in Choteau to gather public input on a bill that would preserve the current levels of outdoor recreation and livestock grazing on about 275,000 acres of public land on the Rocky Mountain Front.

The Great Falls Tribune reports that supporters of the Rocky Mountain Front Heritage Act made a stronger showing at Wednesday’s meeting, but Daines learned the bill has both passionate supporters and detractors.

It would add 67,000 acres of wilderness and limit road building on another 208,000 acres while also protecting current motorized recreation, public access and grazing.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Max Baucus introduced the bill in February and fellow Sen. Jon Tester also supports it. Daines, who is serving his first term in the U.S. House, says he remains undecided.
