A photo of the University of Montana’s University Hall may soon be the feature photo in a Time Magazine cover story, but it may not be the type of attention Missoula wants.

Already posted on, an article titled The Sexual Assault Crisis on American Campuses is scheduled to be published in print on May 26 and currently carries a shot of University Hall draped in shadow with a lead reading:

“The college town of Missoula, Montana, saw at least 80 reported rapes over three years, earning it the name “America’s Rape Capital.” But the nickname has it wrong. Missoula isn’t special; it is fairly average.”

The article’s author Eliza Gray sent out the following tweet on her Twitter account @elizalgray reinforcing the fact that her article will indeed be the cover story. subscribers can read the article in full now. Gray has been contacted for an interview, which will be posted here if she acquiesces.

This is not Gray’s first time covering the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. In April 2014, her article “White House Releases Plan to Curb Campus Sexual Assault,” discusses a White House task force publication titled “Not Alone: The First Report of the White House Task Force to Protect Students From Sexual Assault,” a document that also has an interesting connection to Missoula because it was forged during the Department of Justice investigation into the University of Montana and describes the survey processes that the University was required to adopt in it’s settlement.
