HELENA- The budget axe fell hard in Helena on Thursday as lawmakers cut $93 million from the governor's health and human services budget.

Some $33 million of that is state money while the other $60 million comes from federal funds.

The proposal applies an across the board 5% cut to programs such as foster care and disability services. It also eliminates money for tobacco prevention and significantly cuts the Big Sky RX program, which provides prescription drugs to 11,000 low income Montanans.

The committee also cut $40 million from the federal food stamp program following Thursday's debate.
