Montana is a popular state for gun owners. It is the top state for gun ownership in America. There's not doubt about it. Montanans love their guns. Plans for an expansion of a popular shooting range west of Bozeman have been announced. Here's what you need to know about it.

Details About New Shooting Range West of Bozeman

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks has released details about plans to purchase the (2 Dog Road Easement) from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) near Logan, just west of Bozeman on Interstate 90. According to a press release, Montana FWP wants to purchase 86.4 acres of land near Logan to explore upgrading the existing shooting area and build a more formal and safe shooting range.

As of right now, the shooting range near Logan is owned and operated by the Manhattan Wildlife Association, and only members are allowed to use it. Unfortunately, there aren't really any other options in the area. The purchase would help facilitate the future development of a formal, FWP operated public shooting range to replace the existing informal shooting area.

Recreational shooters have used the area encompassed by the proposed easement for years, despite safety concerns and the lack of safe shooting infrastructure. If approved, FWP would leverage federal funding to purchase the easement from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation.

An environmental assessment for the project is avaIlable, and is open for public comment until September 20. To read the EA or to submit a comment, click here.
