How much money do states spend on education each year? How much of your tax dollars are spent on education? Newly released figures from the U.S. Census Bureau reveal just how much each state spends per student.

To be clear from the start, there are different ways of measuring spending on education. There's the flat dollar amount that each state might spend per student, but there's also the percentage of tax dollars that are spent.

The data provide initial insight into spending per public school pupil (pre-K through 12th grade), as well as revenue and other school system spending in 41 states.

Vermont now spends the most per pupil on K-12 education as of the newly released 2023 data with over $26,000 per student. New York has been the leader in years past, with a figure of $29,000 in 2022.

As of fiscal year 2023, Montana spends $13,769 per student on K-12 education. The U.S. Census Bureau has an infographic for spending per state for easy comparison. Some of Montana's neighboring states' spending is below.

Idaho spent $10,203 per student in fiscal year 2023. North Dakota spent $16,114 per student. South Dakota spent $11,932 per student. Washington spent $18,181 per student. Oregon spent $17,161 per student.

According to the latest data, Alaska spends the most on education as a percentage of taxpayer income, at 5.6%. The District of Columbia spends the least, at 2%.

When it comes to post-secondary education, the numbers get much larger. California spends the most on postsecondary education in total, but New Mexico spends the most per pupil on postsecondary education, at $35,730.
