Montana has several nicknames. The Treasure State, The Last Best Place, and of course, Big Sky Country.

While states like Texas and Alaska like to boast about their size, Montana is the 4th largest state in the country.  Now, we don't do too much bragging here about that, in fact, many Montanans would rather live under the radar, and the less we talk about the state, the better.

However, there are certainly some interesting facts about Montana and one of them describes just how big the state is.

One of my favorite things to do in my younger years was go on road trips. There's just something magical about driving across these great United States that is inspiring. All of the landmarks, cool roadside stops, and funky and weird places to check out along the way. Not to mention the cool mom-and-pop shops where you can find souvenirs and regional foods.

I ran across some data on social media talking about how long it would take to drive across each state without stopping.

Let me just say that some of this data is a little suspect. According to the facts and figures, they say it only takes 4 hours to drive across South Dakota and I swear that is one of the longest drives known to man. However, according to the data, Montana is in the Top 3.

How long does it take to drive across Montana?

If you were to drive across Montana without taking a break it would take you 16 hours from start to finish. The only two states where it would take longer are Texas with a time of 18 hours, and Alaska with a time of 82 hours (that's more than 3 and a half days driving non-stop)

In my years of travel, I have driven across both Montana and Texas, but I haven't made it to Alaska yet. While I must admit, there is a desire on my part to see Alaska, I certainly have no intention to drive across it, especially if it takes 80-plus hours.

So, if you're thinking about seeing more of Big Sky Country, go ahead and plan your trip. Just keep in mind, it's going to take some time to get it all in.
