You're not likely to see multiple supercars driving around every day in Montana, but you're likely to see many of them with Montana plates in other states.

According to iSeeCars, Montana is 49th in the country for the least amount of luxury car sales at 5.9%. Wyoming is 50th at 4.7%, and the most sales go to New Jersey with 29.9%.

Why Do So Many Supercars Have Montana Plates?

Well, it has everything to do with finances and good ole tax loopholes. Out-of-towners who purchase expensive vehicles are not eager to pay additional taxes, and Montana offers several financial benefits in terms of savings.

If you live here, you know there is no sales tax on personal property, and we also don't have vehicle inspection laws for emissions. The only other state that has no emissions is Alaska.

So it's pretty apparent why folks who don't live here would want to take advantage of that if they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a car.

Montana has attempted to crack down on the influx of people using the loophole by imposing HB650. This bill, created in 2017, basically says an $825 luxury tax is owed on light vehicles with an original MSRP greater than or equal to $150,000. However, this only applies to the vehicle if it is 11 years old or newer.

It was reported by the Montana DMV in 2021 that 4 of the 100 Pagani Huayras are registered in the treasure state. The Pagani Huayras are "only" about 2.5 million each.

Flathead and Granite County have the most luxury cars registered at around 2,000 each. If you would like to see the full breakdown, click HERE.

The next time you're traveling and see a luxury car with Montana plates, you'll understand why! It's simply another savvy individual taking advantage of our Montana tax loopholes.
