Warm Temps Cause Restrictions For This Popular Montana River
Warmer temperatures throughout Montana happen every summer, and with those temperatures comes some restrictions.
On Saturday the 27th of July, the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks put out what they call a "Hoot-Owl Restriction".
A Hoot Owl Restriction prohibits all fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight each day. The areas effected by this restriction include Yellowstone River from the Highway 89 Bridge Fishing Access Site (FAS) east of Livingston to the Highway 212 bridge in Laurel.
Considering water temperatures of 77 degrees or more can be lethal to trout, the FWP will put restrictions in place and they will stay in place until conditions improve.
According to the FWP's drought policy, angling restrictions will go into effect when flows drop below critical levels for fish, when water quality is diminished or when maximum daily water temperatures reach at least 73 degrees for three consecutive days.
You can get more information regarding Hoot Owl restrictions on the FWP website. You will also be able to find more water restrictions, including blue algae reports, on their website as well.
