Looks can be deceiving. Or, in the case of this unsightly pooch, they're not.

Sweepee Rambo, a cleverly-named, beastly looking Chihuahua/Chinese Crested miniature from Van Nuys, Calif., was crowned winner at the 2016 World's Ugliest Dog Contest Friday in Petaluma, Calif.

Sweepee, 17, is completely blind and weighs a mere four pounds. She bested (or worsted) 17 other canines to emerge the victor. The head judge said, "Scoring was tough with so many uniquely qualified dogs but we’re confident that Sweepee will be a magnificent champion."

And while some may question the wisdom in honoring those who are unattractive -- is it mean? -- the contest's marketing director says, "We celebrate the spirit and imperfections that make these dogs loveable and adoptable."

An ugly dog contest has been held in Petaluma for half a century, 28 of them at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.

Take another look at Sweepee below, as well as some of the other dogs that rounded out the field.
