If you're planning to shoot off fireworks this 4th of July holiday, here are some things you should know:

Fireworks are not allowed to be shot off at all hours. According to the Bozeman Police Department, fireworks can only be discharged in the city during the following times and dates:

  • July 3 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.
  • July 4 12 p.m. to 1 a.m.
  • July 5 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Locations where it's lawful to shoot off fireworks:

Fireworks can be discharged on private property with the owner’s permission.
Fireworks may not be discharged:

  • upon any public street, alley, road, or right-of-way
  • within 300 feet of any public park
  • within 1,000 feet of any hospital, nursing, or assisted living facility
  • under or upon a motor vehicle, whether moving or not
  • within 300 feet of any gas station

Also, please be advised that inside the city limits, the following fireworks are not legal:

  •  Fireworks that go no higher than 15 feet and are not designed to explode
  •  Sparklers under 12 inches in length
  • Wheel devices with no more than six “driver” units

Please follow these Fireworks Safety Guidelines:

  • Children should always be supervised when around fireworks
  • Children under 12 should not handle fireworks
  • NEVER pick up a firework that is a “dud.” Wait 20 minutes, then soak with water first
  • Avoid areas that are prone to fires and have a fire extinguisher and water with you
  • Discharge fireworks in a manner that does not endanger life, limb or property. Don’t combine or use fireworks in the wrong manner
  • Follow instructions printed on the fireworks

Fireworks & Alcohol Don't Mix

The Bozeman Police Department will have at least 3-4 extra officers on duty for DUI enforcement. The 4th of July is typically the second most deadly holiday due to intoxicated drivers, just behind New Year's Eve.

If you're going to be drinking this holiday weekend, please:

  • Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys
  • If you’re impaired, call a taxi, use Streamline or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely
  • Report intoxicated drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement
  • Wear your safety belt
  • Don’t let anyone else drive intoxicated
