Watch Steven Spielberg and Composer John Williams Composing the Classic ‘E.T’ Theme

Art Streiber

Today the internet unearthed this little vintage gem: director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams working together to write the music for ‘E.T.’ All these guys needed was a piano, some film, and a little magic.

A tip of the hat to Vulture for picking this video up, featuring two legends from their respective fields collaborating to develop the score for one of the most heartwarming films of all time. Steven Spielberg and John Williams get together in this clip to figure out the music for a very touching scene in ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,’ in which Elliot tells E.T. they can grow old together because kids say the darnedest things, you know?

Check out vintage Spielberg beard assisting music master Williams on the piano, showing him the scene from the movie for which they’re composing music. We particularly love Spielberg’s classy piano music description of “duh duh duh duhhhhh” — is that the technical term, or?

‘E.T.’ is currently enjoying its 30th anniversary and was recently released on Blu-ray, in a version where Spielberg — thankfully, finally — re-inserted the guns into the hands of the government agents that had once been replaced with walkie-talkies to keep the film more kid-friendly. If you haven’t picked up the Blu-ray, maybe you can use this neat little video as inspiration:
