The Montana Department of Criminal Investigation said on Thursday, that Phillips County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Guderjahn is doing well, and is still being held for medical observation in Great Falls after being stabbed early Wednesday, making it necessary to shoot and kill his attacker.

Spokesman John Barnes said it’s anticipated that he will be released later today or tomorrow.

"A Phillips County Sheriff's Deputy, Allan Guderjahn, was called out early Wednesday morning to investigate a suspicious man who was walking along Highway 191 just south of Malta," Barnes said. "The deputy confronted the individual, who attacked and stabbed the deputy several times. The deputy discharged his firearm and killed the suspect, who has now been identified as Emil Ambrose Mecklenburg, age 20, from Malta. His autopsy is scheduled for today in Billings."

Barnes said the investigation at the scene has been wrapped up, and a coroner's inquest will be scheduled, which is standard procedure after a fatal shooting by a law enforcement officer.
